Throughout its more than 2,300 years long history, Thessaloniki has been home to many different peoples and cultures. The purpose of this course is to review the history of the city and focus on the separate ethnic communities that have inhabited Thessaloniki through time, principally Greeks, Turks, Jews, and Armenians. The course considers the establishment of the city in the Hellenistic times, its Roman and Byzantine periods, the impact of the Ottoman occupation, the coming of the Sephardic Jews, the effects of the Balkan Wars and of the two World Wars, alongside those of the Holocaust on the populations of the city.
