English 102 is designed to extend critical reading and writing skills developed in English 101 whilst emphasizing critical inquiry and research. In the first part of the course, students engage in reflective writing, conduct primary research and learn how to produce research based writing in formats appropriate to content, purpose, genre and audience. Working as researchers, class members will locate, read, evaluate, analyse, and synthesise appropriate sources as they develop and refine their research projects. To this end, research is emphasized as the path of inquiry not just information that comes from the library but also through observations, interviews and personal experience. In the second half of the course, students will be introduced to the mode of argumentation and argumentative strategies whilst demonstrating critical thinking and logical reasoning. In this part of the course, students are encouraged to take a stance on issues of public concern, so as to begin to view themselves as engaged citizens.
